Energy and the management of its environmental impacts are among the major societal challenges of the 21st century. Companies in this sector have a growing need for engineers trained in this broad field, which requires a wide range of skills.
The curriculum in the Energy Department consists of a core foundation in electrical engineering (electrical engineering, electronics, industrial computing, and automation), supplemented by courses in the fields of thermal and mechanical engineering.
This multidisciplinary approach provides engineering students with a systems-based understanding of energy systems—from production to end use—and, above all, a strong ability to adapt in the workplace.
The Energy Department promotes this systemic approach and covers the entire energy chain:
Your Responsibilities
Objectives
The Energy Department promotes a systems-based approach and thus covers the entire energy chain:
Through this new department, engineering students will be able to approach the field of energy—in terms of innovation, the market, and services—as true project managers.
The key components of this training program, which incorporates technical, economic, regulatory, environmental, and societal considerations, will be:
Programs
Electric Power Generation
To develop and operate power generation facilities that use conventional, renewable, and hybrid energy sources.
Power Grids and Electrical Energy Conversion
To develop, design, and test energy conversion and storage systems, and to operate and monitor stationary and onboard power grids.
Electronics and Embedded Systems
Smart Buildings and Energy Efficiency
To work in engineering firms specializing in building energy efficiency, home automation, and bioclimatic design, and to develop systems for smart energy production and management.

The diploma
Valid from September 1, 2023, through August 31, 2028
I chose to enroll at UTBM primarily for its Energy Department.
The courses did not disappoint me. In fact, the extensive resources made available (fuel cells, small wind turbines, etc.), as well as the hands-on lab work, project management, and two 6-month internships at companies, provided me with a comprehensive, highly technical education.
The breadth of the renewable energy courses I took was a real asset when I was hired by EDF.
Having studied electronics, industrial computing, thermal engineering, and energy management has enabled me to work today as an electrical training instructor at hydroelectric power plants.
