The Ph.D., the highest academic degree, is a professional experience that enables students to acquire high-level scientific skills and transferable skills that are valuable in positions of responsibility across all socioeconomic sectors. It involves conducting an original and innovative research project, on the one hand, and following an Individual Continuing Education Plan to support both the research project and the doctoral student’s career goals, on the other.
The doctoral program is offered through a UBFC-accredited doctoral school under the 2017–2023 agreement. Each of the doctoral schools accredited under the 2017–2023 contract commits to implementing the action plans defined in the decree of May 25, 2016, and in particular the continuing education programs that prepare future doctoral graduates for their professional development, as well as initiatives that promote the structuring of research and transdisciplinarity at each institution’s campus. It will ensure the recruitment of the best doctoral students, the funding of their dissertations (salaries and operational costs), the smooth progress of their research, the dissemination of the results obtained, and equitable support for the accredited research units.

Funding
Enrollment in a doctoral program is possible only if the doctoral school is assured of funding, regardless of the source. The most common sources are as follows:
CIFRE - Industrial Agreements for Training Through Research
CIFRE agreements bring together three partners—a company, a recent graduate, and a research laboratory—around a research project that will lead to the defense of a doctoral dissertation.
These agreements are intended for companies that commit to assigning a recent graduate (with a master’s degree) to conduct research in direct collaboration with an external laboratory.
The CIFRE programs are managed and coordinated bythe National Association for Technical Research (ANRT) on behalf of the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, and Research.
During the three-year term of the agreement, the company receives an annual lump-sum subsidy from the ANRT.
Eligibility Requirements
Doctoral Contract
A three-year fixed-term contract under public law.
Governed by Decree No. 2009-464 of April 23, 2009, the doctoral contract provides the doctoral student with nationally recognized status. With a minimum gross monthly salary of 1,866, the doctoral student becomes a professional and can devote themselves to their research without financial worry. The signing of an amendment corresponding to one-sixth of the contract period to engage in teaching, provide expertise in the industrial sector, promote research findings, or disseminate scientific and technical information.
Regional Allowance
The Franche-Comté Regional Councilstrongly supports UTBM's research projects. This support helps to co-fund doctoral contracts.

1. The primacy of interdisciplinarity, rather than merely multidisciplinarity, in the sense that it particularly supports projects developed through active collaboration among researchers from distinct disciplinary fields—whether these fields are within its own research units or disciplines belonging to other doctoral schools or other research areas (formal sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences, legal sciences, literature, etc.). This interdisciplinary orientation—which is, of course, non-exclusive—is consistent with the School’s essential relationship with the region’s two Maisons des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH in Dijon and MSHE in Besançon), whose scientific mission is precisely grounded in interdisciplinarity.
2. The strategic and practical dimensions of research in the social sciences and humanities. Several research units based at the School conduct research focused on analyzing collective choices and decisions made both within the research process itself and in its applications or consequences for the economic, social, or cultural spheres—for example, in urban planning, food consumption, industrial production, medical ethics, and environmental ethics.
3. International and interregional outreach. The spirit of openness and exchange that characterizes our School is reflected in the development of international and interregional projects, in collaboration with other doctoral schools within the Federation of Doctoral Schools in the Social Sciences and Humanities (ED SHS) and, more broadly, within the COMUE UBFC, as well as through cooperation with the Houses of the Humanities and ongoing collaborations with the universities of Tsukuba (Japan), Mainz (Germany), Ljubljana (Slovenia), the universities of French-speaking Switzerland, Romania, and the Maghreb…
