UTBM trains engineers who are quickly ready for the workforce and particularly adaptable to technological advancements and societal changes. Its programs are grounded in research and commercialization.
Founded in 2005, UTSEUS is a Sino-French engineering institute jointly operated by the universities of technology (UTBM, UTC, UTT) and Shanghai University (SHU).
As a versatile platform for undergraduate engineering education, research, and innovation, UTSEUS has grown significantly, with an average of more than 1,200 students per year, distributed between Shanghai and the UT campuses. UTSEUS was designed to serve a dual purpose: first, to promote the UTs’ unique educational model in China; and second, to prepare Chinese students (more than 130 per year) for the UTs’ engineering and master’s programs during their first three years of the bachelor’s degree in Shanghai, in the fields of mechanical engineering, computer science, materials science, and bioengineering.
Another strength of UTSEUS: it is the only Sino-French engineering platform to host a large number of French students—nearly 140 in 2017: mainly from the second year of the UTs’ core curriculum, for a semester of classes at UTSEUS, but also at the major and master’s levels in two one-semester programs focused on international project engineering (the “IE” semester) and innovation and entrepreneurship (the “LCIE” semester). During their stay in Shanghai, these students—selected by their home UTs—take classes alongside their Chinese peers at UTSEUS and, in doing so, earn the credits required for their degree programs at their home UTs, while enjoying an exceptional academic, cultural, linguistic, and personal experience.
Many companies have signed a partnership agreement with the founding institutions of UTSEUS. This reflects the companies’ involvement in UTSEUS activities: courses taught by company experts, site visits, projects and internships for students, and collaborative research topics.

In 2019, a data science research track focused on cyber-physical systems was established in connection with the UTSEUS’s new master’s degree program.
Since 2011, there has been collaboration on the topic of additive manufacturing between LERMPS (Laboratory for Studies and Research on Materials, Surfaces, and Processes) at UTBM and the State Key Laboratory for Special Steels at SHU (“State Key Laboratory for Special Steels”).
In June 2017, a new framework research agreement on nanotechnology was signed between the Nanotechnology and Optical Instrumentation Laboratory (LNIO) at UTT and the Key Laboratory of Advanced Displays and System Applications (SHU).
These programs allow students to earn college credits while enjoying an exceptional experience—academic, cultural, linguistic, and personal.
In the Core Curriculum, you can spend your final semester abroad for a 6-month study abroad program.
You will have the opportunity to earn a dual UTSEUS Master's degree in Mechatronics: Smart Cyber-Physical Systems.
This program is intended for students in the Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Computer Science programs.
You can also enroll in the IE² program—Innovation for Entrepreneurship in an Intercultural Environment —for a 6-month exchange.
This program is designed for students in the Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Ergonomics, and Energy and Electrical Engineering programs.
