UTBM trains engineers who are quickly ready for the workforce and particularly adaptable to technological advancements and societal changes. Its programs are grounded in research and commercialization.
Founded in 1999 through the merger of ENIBe (1962) and IPSé (1985), UTBM is rooted in northern Franche-Comté, the industrial heart of France, helping to transform the region into a center of technological excellence. From its inception, it has embodied a unique model: a university where basic research and engineering education come together to address industrial challenges, inspired by the Universities of Technology (UTC, UTT).
Our DNA? Educational innovation: learning by doing, project-based learning, and a strong commitment to global engagement (51 nationalities, 230 partner universities). With 9 engineering specializations—including 4 apprenticeship programs—and partnerships with industry giants such as PSA, Alstom, and General Electric, UTBM trains versatile professionals who are ready to innovate. A symbol of this dynamic is “Crunch Time,” launched in 2017, where 1,600 students tackle real-world challenges posed by industry within a limited timeframe.
Organized into four thematic clusters—Energy & Computing (AI, hydrogen, virtual reality), Future Mobility (ergonomics, smart vehicles, the Espera Sbarro School), Industry 4.0 (robotics, smart materials), and Humanities (management, societal challenges)—UTBM closely integrates teaching, research, and industrial applications. Its research platforms, such as the FCLab (fuel cells), are leaders in Europe, while its collaborations with ArianeGroup, Dassault, and Shanghai University (UTSEUS) extend its influence.
With 10,000 engineering graduates since 1999, 3,000 students, and 3,000 partner companies, UTBM remains true to its mission: to anticipate industrial revolutions—from the energy transition to smart mobility—by training professionals capable of balancing technology, people, and sustainability.
