27 students from UV Europe (EE01) participated in a simulation of the Council of the European Union (EU Council of Ministers), designed and facilitated by the Maison de l’Europe de Bourgogne Franche-Comté (https://www.bfc-europe.eu/).
The negotiations, based on actual data, focused on how to translate the ambitions of the European Commission’s Green Deal (December 2019) into a concrete and binding action plan to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050.
This simulation enabled students to understand EU institutions and how they function through gameplay, and helped them grasp the complexity of the energy transition at the national level and within a regional bloc such as the EU: They thus came to realize that the energy transition is not merely a matter of scientific and technical solutions but depends first and foremost on political issues at various territorial levels, power dynamics, and negotiations involving cycles of conflict and compromise.
