In several international policy frameworks, conventional transportation models have been used to quantify these externalities. When an operational model is needed to provide quantitative predictions about human behavior, some form of mathematical framework is incorporated into the models. In this talk, we will explore the research field of activity-based models. In these models, micro-simulation is used to predict people’s complete activity-travel patterns at high temporal and spatial resolution, providing a wealth of information for policy-making. I will provide a brief overview of the state-of-the-art in activity-based modeling and discuss notable developments in this field of research. In addition to applications in transportation research, I will focus on interdisciplinary scientific applications involving several other scientific fields. The talk will also cover novel and interesting trends in the research field, such as the increasing availability of big data and the development of modern survey technology.
